Road expanded from two lanes to three
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (July 8, 2016) — A ribbon cutting was held today to mark the recent completion of the widening of Cooper Chapel Road. The project, begun in August 2014, widened a 1.5 mile section of Cooper Chapel between Preston Highway and Smyrna Parkway from two-lanes to three lanes, with the addition of a center turning lane.
The ribbon cutting was held at a signature feature of the $9.9 million project, a new roundabout installed at the intersection of Cooper Chapel and Chambers Way, to improve traffic flow and enhance safety. The project also included new sidewalks, drainage upgrades and the addition of bike lanes.
The need to widen Cooper Chapel Road was first identified in 1989 in the wake of increasing development around the then-new Interstate 265 Gene Snyder Freeway. State Representative Larry Clark, D-46 worked to secure funding for the project.
“Completion of this project improves the quality of life for citizens who use Cooper Chapel Road on a daily basis,” said Mayor Greg Fischer. “The addition of a center turning lane and a roundabout make for a much smoother commute.”
Project funding was provided by the Federal Highway Administration (80 percent), and Local System Development dollars (20 percent). Both the Louisville Water Co. and Louisville Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD) made major improvements to the water and sewer lines within the project corridor during construction.
