Latest Gallup poll reveals employees’ views on workplace engagement, stress

According to Gallup’s newly released State of the Global Workplace: 2024 Report, not only has employee engagement plateaued, but overall employee wellbeing has declined.

This year’s report features data and insights on global employee engagement, loneliness, mental health, managers and other pressing issues.

Among the key findings of the report:

  • Employee Engagement

62% report being “not engaged” with another 15% saying they are “actively disengaged.” Gallup estimates that low engagement costs the global economy US$8.9 trillion, or 9% of global GDP.

  • Employee Well-Being

34% of employees were thriving in their lives in 2023, marking a one-point decline from 2022, following five consecutive years of improvement on this measure. Also noteworthy: This decline was felt most by younger workers. Well-being among workers under 35 fell from 35% to 31%, while well-being increased for those over 35, from 35% to 36%.

  • Daily Stress

While global employee stress dropped three percentage points from the previous year, 41% of employees say they experienced “a lot of stress” the previous day.

  • Daily Loneliness

The COVID-19 pandemic seems to have put a focus on how much loneliness impacts daily life. An average of 20% of employees reported experiencing “a lot of” loneliness the previous day. When broken down by work environment, 25% of those working fully remote reported being lonely, compared to 21% working a hybrid arrangement and 16% working fully on-site.

  • Intent to Leave

With such levels of engagement, stress and loneliness, it’s not surprising that 52% of workers polled say they are currently looking for another job. That figure is up one percentage point from the previous year.
