Western Kentucky University has announced plans for a bachelor’s degree option in advanced manufacturing with an emphasis in food automation and manufacturing. The new option is being offered only at WKU’s Owensboro campus and is part of what is known as a 2+2 option, whereby students complete their associate’s degree through the Kentucky Community College and Technical System (KCTCS), then complete their bachelor’s degree through Western. Blaine Ferrell, dean of WKU’s Ogden College of Science and Engineering, said the new degree is the only one of its kind in the state and will fill a niche in the Owensboro region, which is home to a number of food manufacturing facilities, including Earthgrains Baking Co. (Sara Lee), Barton Brands, Unilever and Perdue and Tyson chicken processing plants. Coursework for the new degree will be offered beginning this fall.
