GREENSBORO, N.C. (Nov. 28, 2012) â The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Council of Presidents has unanimously voted to accept the University of Louisville as its newest member. The vote followed the submission of UofLâs letter of application.
All 23 Cardinal teams will now play in the ACC.
âWith the addition of the University of Louisville, the ACC continues to be well positioned for the future competing at the highest level in all facets of the collegiate experience,â said the ACC Council of Presidents in a joint statement.
ACC Commissioner John Swofford said UofLâs âaggressive approach to excellence in every respectâ will enhance the leagueâs culture and commitment âto the cornerstones we were founded on 60 years ago.â
In the past 15 years, the ACC also has added Notre Dame, Pittsburg and Syracuse.
âThe University of Louisville is honored to join the ACC, a conference with a long history of excellence in athletics and academics,â said Dr. James Ramsey, UofL president. âThe ACC will be a great home for UofL and our commitment to great academics, groundbreaking research and top-notch athletic teams.â
The move opens doors for the university, both athletically and academically, said Tom Jurich, UofL vice president and director of athletics. It also is good for UofL fans.
âWith the proximity of the institutions ⊠we never have to leave the Eastern time zone,â he said.
