WASHINGTON ā President Joe Biden announced that he is nominating Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to serve on the United States Supreme Court following the retirement of Justice Stephen Breyer last month.
Judge Jackson, 51, currently serves on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. Previously, she served as a District Judge for the capital city for eight years.Ā She attended Harvard for both undergrad and law school.
If confirmed, Judge Jackson will be the first African American woman to serve on the Supreme Court.Ā The Biden administration has noted historical factor would be taken into consideration ever since Breyer announced retirement.
Upon graduation from law school, Jackson served as a law clerk for Justice Breyer, now she will seek to replace him.
President Biden released the following statement along with the nomination: āIām proud to announce that I am nominating Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to serve on the Supreme Court. Currently serving on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, she is one of our nationās brightest legal minds and will be an exceptional Justiceā.
Following the announcement, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell stated: āI look forward to meeting with Judge Jackson in person and carefully reviewing her nomination during the vigorous and thorough Senate process that the American people deserveā.
