Fashion has long been considered art, bringing color, texture and design into our everyday lives. Now Louisville artist Josh Miller has combined his skill in photography with fashion to create what he calls “wearable photos.”
Miller’s striking photos of the Ohio River in Louisville and Southern Indiana have been made into large (50” x 50”) chiffon prints that can be worn as a scarf, sarong, belt or wrap. The dynamic imagery of the photos—featuring water, reflections and light—naturally creates different patterns, colors and shapes, depending on how the piece is worn.
“One print can look completely different, based on which part of the image you feature,” said Miller. “To me, there is nothing more empowering than getting to wear a piece of art. These wearable photos can become part of your life when you venture out into the world.”
“I love the movement in these pieces—I sense it even in the still photos,” said Louisville resident Nubia Bennett. “They provide a statement accessory to simple solids, yet they are versatile enough to pair with a more daring print.”
Bennett noted that even though she comes from a family of painters, sculptors and photographers, “I didn’t inherit hands that could build or sketch, but I build installations out of the simple act of getting dressed each morning.”
Miller has established a solid reputation in Louisville for his creativity and leadership. He is the co-founder and CEO of IDEASxLAB, which was named Nonprofit of the Year in 2019 by the Derby Diversity & Business Summit. He is also a 2021 National Leadership Academy for the Public’s Health’s fellow and a two-time TEDx speaker. (TEDx is a grassroots initiative that brings the spirit of technology, entertainment and design to local communities around the globe through events organized by individuals who seek to uncover new ideas and share the latest research in their local areas.) He is also a founding board member of Civitas, a regional chamber of commerce for LGBTQ and ally businesses that is part of the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce’s national affiliate network.
