East Kentucky Power Cooperative has been awarded a permit from the Kentucky Division of Air Quality for two new generating units at the J.K. Smith Station in Clark County. The two new units are expected to be online by Oct. 1, 2009, at a cost of about $80 million apiece. Together, the two new units will have the capacity to generate about 200 megawatts of power, or enough electricity to power 110,000 Kentucky homes. The units, fueled by natural gas, are designed to provide power during periods of high usage, such as very cold and very hot days when heating and air-conditioning systems use large amounts of power.
