Frankfort, KY (May 20, 2013)Ā ā Kentucky Treasurer Todd Hollenbach is looking for a few good volunteers to help him and hisĀ Treasure FindersĀ program search for folks in Kenton County who may be able to claim 37,971 pieces of abandoned property worth $11.8 million.
āMost of the properties are in the form of cash from old insurance policies, stocks and bonds, and leftover bank accounts,ā Hollenbach said. āBut there are also more than 50,000 unclaimed items stored in the Treasury vault, including hundreds of military items from Civil War discharge papers to Purple Hearts.ā
The Treasure Finders event for Kenton County is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. ET Thursday May 30Ā on the 4thĀ floor of the Kenton County Courthouse at 303 Court St. in Covington.
Hollenbach created theĀ Treasure FindersĀ program in 2009. Prior to that time, the unclaimed property program was operated in a passive manner that relied on newspaper advertising to alert people of possible claims and then put the burden on the claimant to institute the process to recover their property.
āWe needed to be proactive and take the process to the people.Ā Treasure FindersĀ goes directly to the counties and partners with local officials and private sector volunteers, folks who have local knowledge of their community. Itās the volunteers who makeĀ Treasure FindersĀ work,ā Hollenbach said.
The treasurer visited Independence last week calling for volunteers and will be back in Covington next Tuesday, May 28,Ā to recruit more before the event on Thursday, May 30.
Hollenbach has set a goal of taking the Treasure Finders program to all 120 counties in Kentucky and returning $100 million in claims before his second term ends in 2015. Since he first took office in 2008, the Treasurer has held events in over half the counties and returned a record $ 80 million in unclaimed property.
