Popular Lexington brewery expands into Northern Kentucky

Lexington-based West Sixth Brewing has announced a major expansion and investment in Northern Kentucky with the opening of West Sixth Covington Haus.

West Sixth’s presence in Northern Kentucky will transition from its Box Park location in Newport to West Sixth Covington Haus this fall. West Sixth has also forged a new distribution relationship with Chas Seligman Distributing Co. that will significantly increase the availability of its beers throughout the region.

“This Northern Kentucky expansion has long been a priority for us and we’re really excited to round out our Kentucky reach with this bigger taproom space,” said Ben Self, co-founder of West Sixth Brewing. “We’ll have 20 beers on tap, plenty of space for families and friends, and later this year, a full restaurant.”

West Sixth Covington Haus will be serendipitously located at 100 West Sixth Street in Covington, a beautiful building with arched windows, intricate exterior stonework and a rich history. Originally erected as a firehouse, over the years the building has been home to several notable establishments but is best known as the popular “Covington Haus” bar and restaurant. Covington Haus was led by the late Mick Noll, who was a tireless advocate for the Covington community.

“When we found this space and learned the history of the building and the Noll’s involvement in the community, we knew we wanted to pay tribute to the history by naming the location West Sixth Covington Haus,” said Self. “His family has graciously given their blessing for the use of the name and shared some wonderful stories about the bar’s legacy with us.”

“We are very happy to see another new life for The Covington Fire House No. 1,” said Ludwig Noll, son of Mick Noll. “My parents, Mick and Pat Noll, spent a lot of life capital saving it from being demolished in the ‘70s, turning it into Mick Noll’s Covington Haus. Because of their passion, the Covington Haus lives on so that West Sixth Brewing and the people of the region can continue to spread gemütlichkeit within its walls.”

West Sixth Covington Haus will occupy the first floor of the building, while the top floor will continue to host the acclaimed cocktail bar, Second Story.

In addition to its flagship Lexington brewery and taproom, West Sixth also operates a farm in Frankfort, and a Louisville taproom in the city’s NuLu neighborhood.
