Leading up to Americans’ annual celebration of Independence Day, Gallup conducted a poll to gauge how Americans feel about the country and the direction it is taking.
The Data: This year, the percentage of U.S. adults who are “extremely proud” to be American is steady at 41%, near the low of 38% recorded in 2022. Together, those who feel extremely or “very proud” amounts to 67%.
Political Divide: Republicans are uniquely patriotic, with 59% versus 36% of independents and 34% of Democrats reporting they are extremely proud to be American.
The Data: Only about one in five Americans are satisfied with the direction of the U.S. (21%) in Gallup’s latest measure in June.
The Trend: Low levels of satisfaction aren’t new. For over two decades, less than half of the public has been satisfied with the way things are going in the U.S. It hasn’t reached the 30% mark since 2021 and — aside from a few measures collected just before the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic — has not reached the 40% mark since 2005.
The Data: Americans were slightly more satisfied with five aspects of the state of the nation this January than they were three years ago. These include two involving race relations, two aspects of government, and the nation’s moral and ethical climate.
State of the Nation: However, of the 29 aspects of the country Gallup has tracked over this time, public satisfaction has declined in 12, been steady in 12 and improved in five.
