2023 tourism spending up $1.9 million in Christian County

Christian County- May 31, 2024 – Visitor spending and the resulting economic impact in Christian County reached record highs in 2023, according to a report released by the Kentucky Department of Tourism.

“We are thrilled to announce for the third year in a row that visitor spending and the economic impact have reached unprecedented levels in the past year,” said Oak Grove Tourism Executive Director Traci Cunningham. “This achievement underscores Christian County’s growing reputation as a premier travel destination in Kentucky. Economic impact figures show that visitors to the area spent $239.1 million in 2023, which is $1.9 million more than the $237.19 million record previously set in 2022.  The increase in visitor spending is a testament to our city’s charm and the hard work of our local businesses and tourism partners. Our strategic marketing campaigns, partnerships with regional attractions, and investments in visitor experience have paid off remarkably.”

Cunningham noted a continued increase in festivals, concerts and community events drew record crowds, enhancing Oak Grove’s reputation as a vibrant cultural hub. Oak Grove Racing, Gaming & Hotel has contributed to the increase in visitor spending and overall monumental growth.

Amy Rogers, executive director with the Hopkinsville Christian County Convention and Visitors Bureau, said, “Amazing! We pride ourselves on welcoming guests from all over the world and providing them with unique experiences. Whether it’s enjoying the sweet and savory taste from our local barbecue venues, learning why Hopkinsville is the Batter Capital of the World, tasting and touring our craft distilleries and brewery, or simply enjoying the beautiful landscapes and scenery Western Kentucky has to offer, there is something for everyone to see, do and taste.”

The economic impact extends beyond direct spending. The tourism industry in Christian County has created over 1,804 new jobs countywide, up from 1,791 in 2022, and generating $46.7 million in labor income. Jobs range from hospitality and retail positions to roles in event management and outdoor recreation services. Additionally, the increase in tourism has generated substantial tax revenue, which is being reinvested into community projects, infrastructure improvements, and promotional initiatives to sustain growth.

Using the Tourism Economics model, the economic impact of the tourism industry in Kentucky generated $13.8 billion in visitor spending in 2023, supporting more than 95,235 jobs and $996.2 million in state and local taxes.
