American Standard Brands has announced plans to close its plant in Paintsville, where it has been producing faucets, showerheads and drains since 1969. At one point the company employed more than 700 workers at the Johnson County facility, but now has only 48 workers remaining there as much of the company’s work has shifted outside of the U.S. American Standard officials said the United States’ recent downturn in the housing market has impacted demand for the company’s products and the plant’s location – 75 miles from an interstate highway – made shipping costly and difficult.
