East Kentucky Power Cooperative has completed building and begun commissioning two new electricity-generating units at its J. K. Smith Station in southern Clark County that are fueled by natural gas. Together, the two new units will have the capacity to generate about 200 megawatts of power, or enough electricity to power about 110,000 Kentucky homes. The natural gas units are designed to provide electricity during periods of high usage, such as very cold and very hot days when heating and air-conditioning systems use large amounts of power. The new units join seven existing natural gas units at Smith Station.
