New Jenny Wiley Theatre to be constructed in Pikeville

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (Sept. 14, 2012) — Plans for a new Jenny Wiley Theatre in Pikeville have been finalized, the Associated Press reports.

Jenny Wiley is the only professional theatre company in Kentucky east of Interstate 75. It decided last year to move its base to Pikeville, after city officials there agreed to contribute $1.2 million toward the construction of an indoor theater and help fund operations. The theatre had been located in Prestonsburg for 47 years.

WYMT-TV reports that the building committee met Thursday with a New York architectural firm to finish design plans and voted unanimously to move forward.

The vote reportedly was the “final thumbs up” for Pikeville officials to begin planning for the project. Construction is set to begin in January.
